Legendary Carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi’s biopic continues to generate significant buzz, with several prominent actresses reportedly being considered for the coveted role. The latest reports suggest that Rashmika Mandanna may now be the frontrunner to portray the iconic singer, with director Gowtam Tinnanuri expected to helm the project.
Rashmika Mandanna linked to MS Subbulakshmi biopic
According to reports from 123Telugu, Rashmika Mandanna recently participated in a look test for the role of MS Subbulakshmi at her residence. While the development has sparked excitement among fans, the makers have yet to make an official announcement regarding the casting.
The biographical drama has been the subject of speculation for months, with multiple actresses reportedly being considered for the lead role before Rashmika’s name entered the conversation.
Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth were previously rumored
Before Rashmika emerged as a contender, actresses Sai Pallavi and Rukmini Vasanth were frequently linked to the project. Earlier reports even suggested that Sai Pallavi had begun preparing for the role by undergoing training in Carnatic music, fueling speculation that she would eventually headline the film.
However, with no formal confirmation from the production team, the final casting decision remains under wraps.
Rashmika Mandanna’s upcoming projects
Rashmika was last seen in The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran. The film centered on Bhooma Devi, a reserved literature student who escapes an oppressive household only to find herself caught in a toxic and controlling relationship.
The movie also featured Dheekshith Shetty, Anu Emmanuel, Rao Ramesh, and others in key roles.
Up next, Rashmika will be seen in Cocktail 2 alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. The romantic drama, billed as a spiritual successor to the 2012 film Cocktail, revolves around another complicated love triangle and is scheduled to release in theatres on June 19, 2026.
The actress also has Ranabaali in her lineup, a period action drama starring Vijay Deverakonda. Directed by Rahul Sankrityayan, the film is set in 18th-century Rayalaseema and follows the journey of a warrior fighting against British rule. Reports indicate that the production is nearing completion, with only a small portion of filming remaining ahead of its planned September 11, 2026 release.
Apart from these projects, Rashmika is also attached to the action entertainer Mysaa.
