Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai collected Rs. 8.50 crore on its Day 3 (Sunday), registering an 8-10 per cent spike over the previous day. The comedy drama, starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, wrapped its opening weekend at Rs. 23.75 crore nett at the Indian box office. That’s an ordinary weekend for a Varun Dhawan film.
Touted to be the final film of David Dhawan, the movie is performing on similar lines to Varun’s previous film, Sunny SanskariKi Tulsi Kumari. For the record, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari minted Rs. 60 crore in its full run, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai should aim to overtake it or end up on similar notes.
The rom-com genre and mid-scale films are struggling in the post-pandemic times in general. One of the prime reasons is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, conditioning audiences to simply wait for the streaming release. The makers need time to elongate the window to somewhere around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
Box office collections of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai are as follows:
Day Box Office
Day 1 Rs. 7.75 crore
Day 2 Rs. 7.50 crore
Day 3 Rs. 8.50 crore
Total Rs. 23.75 crore nett
