Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, is set to hit theatres on October 15, 2026. While Vijay Sethupathi has largely stepped away from cameo appearances, the actor has now revealed why he made an exception for the highly anticipated sequel.
Vijay Sethupathi explains why he said yes to Jailer 2
Speaking to host Gobinath on YouTube, Vijay Sethupathi said, “I have completely stopped doing cameos. The only exception is Jailer 2, which I did for Rajinikanth sir. If my poster is put on Jailer 2, the audience will only notice Rajini sir. But in smaller films, they market the movie using my cameo on the posters, and that affects the films I’m doing as a hero.”
The actor explained that promotional campaigns built around his cameo roles often impact the perception of his projects as a lead actor, which is why he no longer accepts such appearances.
Jailer 2 is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster, with Rajinikanth returning as Muthuvel Pandian. The film also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in pivotal roles. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Hrithik Roshan, and Vijay Sethupathi are also expected to reprise their respective characters.
Rajinikanth and Vijay Sethupathi’s upcoming films
After Jailer 2, Rajinikanth will headline Dharman, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu and co-produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International. The film also features Simran, Raashi Khanna, and Yogi Babu in key roles.
Rajinikanth is also expected to reunite with Kamal Haasan for the tentatively titled KHxRK Reunion, which will reportedly be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.
Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi will next be seen in Train, directed by Mysskin. He also has Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road with Puri Jagannadh, besides key roles in Arasan, headlined by Silambarasan TR, and Pocket Novel.
