Suriya’s much-anticipated film Karuppu is now set to release on May 14, 2026. Directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy actioner was originally planned for a 2025 release, but the filmmaker has now opened up about the delay.

Why Karuppu was delayed

In a conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan on YouTube, RJ Balaji revealed that the film was initially aimed for a Diwali release but couldn’t meet deadlines due to pending CGI work.

“We were supposed to release the film during Diwali, but we couldn’t complete the CGI work before Pongal. I didn’t want to release the film on random dates like January or February. I wanted a peak summer release,” he explained.

He further added that while a Tamil New Year release was considered, it wasn’t ideal due to crowded promotional cycles. “If campaigns are in peak mode, people might forget the film in two days. The delay was necessary, but it will be worth it,” Balaji said.

What to expect from Karuppu

Describing the film as a full-fledged entertainer, RJ Balaji shared that Karuppu blends humor with a strong emotional core. The first half focuses on a relatable issue, building up to a powerful interval, followed by an engaging second half where the protagonist resolves the conflict.

He likened the film’s tone to classics like Padayappa, Muthu, and Ghilli, calling it a repeat-watch family entertainer.

Set in a chaotic world plagued by fear and injustice, the story follows a mysterious man who rises as an unlikely hero. His journey from obscurity to becoming a symbol of hope forms the crux of the narrative, emphasizing the triumph of good over evil.

Cast and crew

Alongside Suriya, the film stars Trisha Krishnan as the female lead. The ensemble cast includes Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maaya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Yogi Babu. The film’s music and background score are composed by Sai Abhyankkar.

Suriya’s upcoming projects

Looking ahead, Suriya will next be seen in Vishwanath and Sons, directed by Venky Atluri. The romantic drama also stars Mamitha Baiju and Raveena Tandon, and is expected to release in July 2026.

He has also begun work on a cop action-comedy tentatively titled Suriya 47, directed by Jithu Madhavan. The film features Nazriya Nazim as the female lead and Naslen in a key role, with music composed by Sushin Shyam.
