Varanasi, headlined by Mahesh Babu, is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on April 7, 2027. With the highly anticipated release still some time away, a new report has surfaced online offering details about the much-discussed Ramayana sequence in the film.
Varanasi: Will Mahesh Babu’s Ramayana sequence feature a major battle?
According to a report by Telugu Chitraalu, the Ramayana portion in Varanasi is said to revolve exclusively around the fierce confrontation between Lord Rama and Kumbhakarna, with Mahesh Babu reportedly making a grand appearance as Lord Rama. The sequence is also said to feature Lord Hanuman and the Vanara Sena.
Interestingly, the report claims that Sita, King Ravana, and several other prominent characters from the Ramayana will not appear in this particular segment, as the film is reportedly focusing on this specific chapter of the epic. However, these details are currently based only on reports, and the makers have not officially confirmed the information.
Meanwhile, the makers recently unveiled a fresh look of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra. The new stills were released on the superstar’s birthday and showed him in the avatar of a rugged explorer. One image featured him in a more casual appearance, while another presented a much more intense version of the character.
What is Varanasi about?
As per reports, Varanasi is set in the year 2027, against the backdrop of a global crisis. A massive asteroid named Shambhavi is reportedly heading directly towards Varanasi, threatening the city with destruction.
At the centre of the story is Rudhra, a rugged archaeologist and explorer who is recruited for a dangerous mission across the globe to retrieve an ancient cosmic artefact. He is joined by Mandakini, a fearless historian who is also an accomplished marksman.
The film’s reported storyline develops into a technologically advanced sci-fi adventure spanning several international locations, including the African jungles, the frozen terrain of Antarctica, and various parts of Europe. Along the way, Rudhra and Mandakini are pursued by Kumbha, a brilliant tech-savvy antagonist.
The synopsis also hints that the answer to preventing a catastrophic future event may be concealed within Varanasi’s ancient and mythical past, connecting the film’s futuristic storyline with its historical and mythological elements.
Alongside Mahesh Babu, the movie features Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in key roles. With the project requiring extensive VFX and several elaborate shooting schedules, the makers are reportedly aiming to complete filming by October 2026.
