The Tamil film industry is grieving the loss of acclaimed cinematographer, filmmaker, and author R. Chezhiyan. According to reports, the veteran passed away on Friday, July 10, 2026, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Taramani, Chennai.
Vijay Sethupathi and film fraternity pay tribute to R. Chezhiyan
The passing of celebrated cinematographer, director, and writer R. Chezhiyan at the age of 57 has left the Tamil film fraternity heartbroken. Following the news of his demise, several members of the industry took to social media to pay their respects.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi shared a photograph of Chezhiyan on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Rest in peace, Chezhiyan sir.”
Writer-producer Adham Bava also expressed his grief through a heartfelt message. He wrote, “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the passing of my dear friend, cinematographer, and director Mr. Chezhiyan. His warm smile, humble nature, and the kindness with which he treated everyone, along with his remarkable artistic contributions to Tamil cinema, will always be remembered.”
He further added, “I pray that his soul rests in peace. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, relatives, and the entire film fraternity. May they find the strength and peace to cope with this irreparable loss.”
Actor M. Sasikumar also mourned the filmmaker’s demise.
Born in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, R. Chezhiyan initially studied civil engineering before choosing to pursue his passion for photography and filmmaking. He later moved to Chennai, where he trained under several noted artists and gradually established himself in the industry.
Chezhiyan began his journey as an independent cinematographer with the 2007 film Kalloori. Over the years, he earned widespread appreciation for his visually striking and realistic storytelling in films such as Rettaisuzhi, Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, Magizhchi, Paradesi, and Joker.
He made his directorial debut with To Let in 2017, a film that received widespread critical acclaim, won several awards, and was screened at numerous international film festivals, further highlighting his talent as a filmmaker.
Apart from cinema, Chezhiyan was also a respected author and mentor. He wrote several books, including Ulaga Cinema, and founded The Film School, where he trained and inspired aspiring filmmakers with his knowledge and experience.
