Awarapan 2 added Rs. 3.25 crore on its second Tuesday, recording a modest increase over Monday. The slight growth was aided by lower ticket prices, although the film was expected to see a stronger jump. With this, the Emraan Hashmi starrer’s second-week earnings reached Rs. 28 crore nett in five days, taking its overall India tally to Rs. 139.50 crore nett.
The film is expected to add around Rs. 33 crore during its second week, pushing the running total towards Rs. 145 crore. However, collections could witness a significant drop from Wednesday onwards as Yash’s Toxic has taken over a majority of the screens. Going by the current trend, Awarapan 2 is projected to finish its theatrical run at approximately Rs. 150 crore nett.
Awarapan 2 is the sequel to the 2007 film, which initially performed poorly at the box office before gaining cult status over the years. The renewed popularity of intense romantic dramas with successful music last year brought Emraan Hashmi’s earlier work back into the spotlight. The actor had delivered several films in this genre during the 2000s and early 2010s, including Murder 2, Raaz 3, Jannat 2, and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, before experiencing a downturn in fortunes later in the decade.
The resurgence of the genre eventually paved the way for Awarapan 2, and the sequel has proved to be a major success. A sequel to a film that was a DISASTER originally turning into a HIT is an extremely rare occurrence. Last year, re-releases of former FLOPs such as Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu found renewed success, while Awarapan 2 has taken that revival to a much larger scale.
