Main Vaapas Aaunga closed its first week at Rs. 12.50 crore nett approx at the Indian box office, adding Rs. 2.25 crore nett approx on Thursday. The box office figures are low, but what is impressive is the trend they have come with. The weekdays saw the business increasing on each day. The last day of the week was almost double the first day, which is a phenomenal trajectory.
This trend gives the film a shot at sailing through, even though it’s a long shot. What it needs is to continue this upward trajectory over the coming weekend, reach a decent level of collections, say Rs. 4-5 crore nett on Sunday, and then sustain on that. That is easier said than done, because there will be competition from Cocktail 2, a film catering to the same audience as Main Vaapas Aaunga, with fresh competition arriving every subsequent week. If it does that, it will be like coming back from the dead, fitting its title.
Director Imtiaz Ali doesn’t have a stellar box office record, particularly in his last couple of releases. He does command a niche audience and generally has hit soundtracks, which have given his films a respectable start, although they often falter with the trend. This time, the trend is there, but the start was just way too low. In comparison, the costs are high, and even with this trend, it may not be enough, but at least there is some positive read for now.
