Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai collected Rs. 80 lakh on its 2nd Thursday (Day 14), wrapping its second week at Rs. 11 crore nett. Allied to its first week of Rs. 36 crore, the two-week theatrical cume of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai reached Rs. 47 crore nett at the Indian box office.
Directed by David Dhawan, the Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde starrer is now running in its last legs. Based on current trends, the movie is expected to wind up its full run around Rs. 50 crore nett at the Indian box office, which will be less than Varun Dhawan’s previous release, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari. That said, the movie turned out to be another underwhelmer for the actor.
The rom-com genre and mid-scale films are struggling in the post-pandemic times in general. One of the prime reasons is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, conditioning audiences to simply wait for the streaming release. The makers need time to elongate the window to somewhere around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
