Karan Johar on adapting Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
Karan Johar is set to bring back the emotionally layered story of Dev, Maya, and Rhea—this time in a web series format. Speaking to The Week, he revealed that the 2006 romantic drama is being adapted into a long-form show nearly two decades after its theatrical release.
When asked about turning one of his films into a series, he confirmed, “We are actually adapting Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna into a long-form series. It will be out soon.”
Reflecting on the film, Johar recalled how it received a divided response upon release. He shared that many viewers were uncomfortable with its portrayal of infidelity, with some even questioning his intent and perspective at the time.
Looking back, he acknowledged that the film was perhaps ahead of its time, as certain sections of the audience found its narrative bold and controversial. Reactions ranged from criticism to outright rejection, with some viewers even walking out of theatres.

Apart from films, Johar also spoke about his popular celebrity chat show, Koffee With Karan. He confirmed that the much-awaited ninth season is in the works and is expected to premiere around Diwali this year.
