Rohit Roy, who has had a long-standing career in both television and films, recently opened up about the differences between the two mediums. Reflecting on his professional journey, the actor referred to television as a “dustbin medium” and expressed his concerns over the lack of originality and the way members of the TV fraternity conduct themselves.
Rohit Roy feels television lacks creativity
During his conversation with the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, Rohit Roy was asked whether the television industry has become more professional while compromising on its craft. Addressing the question, the actor admitted that he is often hesitant to sound ungrateful, but shared his blunt assessment of television.
According to Rohit, television content has a very short shelf life, with viewers quickly moving on to newer shows. He pointed out that the sheer volume of content being produced, along with the repetition of similar storylines, has left little room for creativity.
The actor noted that shows like Swabhimaan have managed to remain memorable, while many other projects from his career have faded from public memory.
Rohit was also asked about the perceived difference in status between Bollywood and television actors. He explained that, in his opinion, film actors possess a certain “carriage” that television actors often lack. He said that when a film star makes a public appearance, particularly a major star, they tend to carry themselves with a sense of grace, dignity, style and confidence.

Further explaining his perspective, Rohit said that observing a gathering of television actors would itself reveal the difference. He stressed that actors should maintain a certain level of grace and dignity, particularly when they know photographers are present.
He also criticised what he described as unnecessary behaviour and comments made for the attention of the paparazzi, while pointing to the way some television personalities dress and present themselves in public.
When the host suggested that Rohit may have absorbed the perceived hierarchy between television and cinema over the years, the Kkusum actor stood by his viewpoint. He reiterated that cinema has a lasting value because it is “for posterity” and once again compared television to a “dustbin medium.”
Rohit drew an analogy with cricket, comparing the distinction between cinema and television to representing India versus playing for a state in the Ranji Trophy.
