Varun Dhawan’s Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan, collected Rs. 3.25 crore on its Day 4 (Monday). The movie registered a 58-60 per cent drop from the opening day. That’s a big drop to say so. The comedy drama took its running cume to Rs. 27 crore nett at the Indian box office.
Based on current trends, the movie is looking to wind up its first week around the Rs. 35 crore mark. Co-starring Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai should continue gaining traction until the release of Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga on June 19, since there is no significant release in its second week.
The rom-com genre and mid-scale films are struggling in the post-pandemic times in general. One of the prime reasons is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, conditioning audiences to simply wait for the streaming release. The makers need time to elongate the window to somewhere around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
Box office collections of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai are as follows:
Day Box Office
Day 1 Rs. 7.75 crore
Day 2 Rs. 7.50 crore
Day 3 Rs. 8.50 crore
Day 4 Rs. 3.25 crore
Total Rs. 27.00 crore nett
