Mortal Kombat has long remained a fan-favorite gaming franchise, though its film adaptations have had a mixed track record over the past three decades. After the 2021 reboot, the series is now gearing up for its next chapter with Mortal Kombat II, set to release this May. Ahead of the premiere, Karl Urban opened up in an exclusive chat about stepping into the role of Johnny Cage.
Karl Urban on transforming into Johnny Cage
Portraying Johnny Cage meant fully embracing the physical and emotional demands of the character. Karl Urban revealed that when audiences first meet Cage in the film, he is far from his peak.
“He’s at a low point in life—his career is struggling, and he’s lost his way,” Urban explained. “The story really follows his journey of rediscovering himself and finding his inner strength.” He added that the script by Jeremy Slater played a big role in drawing him to the project, as it gives the character a compelling arc.
Diving into martial arts and stunt training
To prepare for the role, Urban went back to basics, immersing himself in the world of martial arts and competitive fighting culture—an essential part of Johnny Cage’s background.
He shared that the preparation was intense from the very beginning. “As soon as I landed, I was taken straight to stunt rehearsals,” he said, highlighting the scale of the film’s action sequences. Working with what he described as one of the best stunt teams he’s collaborated with, Urban credited them for helping bring authenticity to the role.
The actor expressed excitement about the final result, teasing that audiences can expect high-energy action and detailed choreography.
What to expect from the film
Mortal Kombat II continues the story of Earthrealm’s defenders as they face new threats. Johnny Cage joins the fight, navigating his own challenges while battling alongside—and sometimes against—his allies to stop the forces led by Shao Kahn.
The martial arts fantasy sequel is slated to hit theatres on May 8, 2026.
