Following his acclaimed transformations in films such as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Toofaan, Farhan Akhtar may soon take on yet another demanding role.The actor-filmmaker is currently in advanced negotiations with director Neeraj Pandey to portray legendary composer Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as Pancham Da, in an upcoming biographical drama.
According to sources close to the development, the film is being designed as a grand cinematic tribute to one of India’s most influential and beloved music composers.
A source reveals, “Neeraj Pandey has been working on the RD Burman biopic for quite some time, and the script is progressing steadily. Farhan Akhtar has shown strong interest in playing Pancham Da and is enthusiastic about bringing the composer’s remarkable life story to audiences. If the project moves forward as planned, Farhan will undergo extensive training and preparation to authentically portray the iconic musician.”
The makers have reportedly secured the rights to several of RD Burman’s timeless songs, which will play a major role in the storytelling.
“The team has acquired access to some of Pancham Da’s most memorable compositions. Their vision is to create a sincere and emotionally engaging tribute to his extraordinary legacy. Music sessions are already underway to ensure the songs are presented in the best possible way while preserving their original magic,” adds the source.
Pinkvilla has also learned that the biopic is expected to go on floors toward the end of 2026.
Neeraj Pandey will direct and co-produce the project alongside Farhan Akhtar’s banner, Excel Entertainment. The film is considered one of the most ambitious music-based biographical dramas currently in development, with production expected to begin once scripting and pre-production are finalized.
An official announcement is likely to be made after the makers complete the final stages of development.
Rahul Dev Burman remains one of the most celebrated music directors in Indian cinema. Throughout his illustrious career spanning the 1960s to the early 1990s, he composed music for over 300 films and delivered countless evergreen classics that continue to influence generations of musicians.
The legendary composer passed away on January 4, 1994, following a heart attack. Among his many memorable creations, the iconic song Musafir Hoon Yaaron from Parichay (1972) remains one of his most cherished works. His contribution to Indian film music continues to be remembered and celebrated decades after his passing.
