Main Vaapas Aaunga vs 12th Fail at the box office: Imtiaz Ali’s film fares better in first three weeks; HIT status still possible?

by masalabuzz

Box office turnarounds driven purely by positive word-of-mouth are a rarity, but Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga is currently enjoying exactly that. Strong audience appreciation has rescued the film after a modest start, putting it on course to emerge as a successful theatrical venture. A similar phenomenon was witnessed with 12th Fail, which transformed into one of Bollywood’s biggest sleeper hits through exceptional word-of-mouth.

Interestingly, Main Vaapas Aaunga has actually performed better than 12th Fail during its first three weeks at the Indian box office. However, the real challenge lies ahead. What made 12th Fail extraordinary was its phenomenal run after the third week, something that ultimately elevated it to cult status at the box office. If Main Vaapas Aaunga can display similar staying power, it has a realistic chance of securing a HIT verdict, although achieving that will be far from easy.

One of the biggest strengths of 12th Fail was its remarkable late run. The film continued attracting audiences for months and even witnessed an unprecedented resurgence after its OTT premiere in the ninth week, adding nearly Rs. 5 crore nett post-digital release. Such a feat remains extremely rare and would be difficult for Main Vaapas Aaunga to replicate.

That said, the Imtiaz Ali directorial may not need such extraordinary legs if it maintains its current momentum over the next two weeks. Its biggest immediate test will come with the arrival of Dhamaal 4, which is expected to intensify competition at the ticket windows.

For perspective, 12th Fail concluded its theatrical run with approximately Rs. 57.80 crore nett, earning a Clean Hit verdict. Meanwhile, Main Vaapas Aaunga has already collected Rs. 49.20 crore nett in just three weeks and is projected to finish its run in the Rs. 65–70 crore nett range. However, it is worth noting that Main Vaapas Aaunga carries a production budget nearly three times higher than 12th Fail, making its path to profitability comparatively more challenging.
