Sardar 2, starring Karthi in the lead, is scheduled to hit cinemas on September 10, 2026. Director PS Mithran has opened up about the upcoming sequel, highlighting Karthi’s dedication and explaining how the story grows into an international-scale espionage thriller.
PS Mithran on Karthi’s crucial role in Sardar 2
In an interaction with Ananda Vikatan, PS Mithran praised Karthi’s commitment to the project, noting that the actor had to portray both versions of his character while navigating the story simultaneously.
The filmmaker explained that Karthi’s complete involvement, passion and determination were essential to bringing the film together. According to Mithran, Sardar 2 explores the psychological and emotional dimensions of the mission while delivering a full-fledged action-spy thriller.
The director further revealed that the film approaches espionage differently. Rather than beginning with international conflicts, the story starts at a much simpler level before gradually expanding onto the global stage. He also described the movie as a tale involving mysterious figures who operate discreetly without attracting attention.
What to expect from Sardar 2
The makers recently unveiled the teaser for Sardar 2, offering a glimpse into the high-stakes espionage world established in the first instalment. Karthi returns in his dual roles as the father-son duo, while SJ Suryah plays the antagonist Black Dagger.
The teaser also features Malavika Mohanan, Ashika Ranganath and Rajisha Vijayan. The film serves as a sequel to the 2022 release Sardar.
The first film followed Vijay Prakash, a police officer struggling with the legacy of his father Chandra Bose, also known as spy agent Sardar, who had been branded a traitor. Vijay eventually uncovers the truth behind his father’s actions and learns that Sardar had sacrificed his reputation to safeguard the country.
Karthi’s upcoming projects
After Sardar 2, Karthi is set to headline the period action drama Marshal. The actor also has upcoming collaborations with filmmakers Kalyan Shankar and Mohan Raja.
