RJ Balaji Drops Reality Check on Karuppu Delay: ‘2 Days and It’s Gone’

Suriya’s much-awaited film Karuppu is now scheduled to release on May 14, 2026. Helmed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action drama was originally planned for a 2025 theatrical release. The director has now opened up about what led to the delay.

Karuppu delay: RJ Balaji explains the reason

In a conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan on YouTube, RJ Balaji revealed that the team initially aimed for a Diwali release but couldn’t complete the CGI work in time for Pongal. He explained that he was not keen on releasing the film on arbitrary dates like late January or mid-February, instead preferring a prime summer window.

Although a Tamil New Year release was also considered, he noted that heavy promotional activity during that period could cause the film to quickly fade from public memory. “People might forget the film within a couple of days,” he said, adding that despite the delay, he believes the final outcome justifies the wait.

What to expect from Karuppu

Talking about the film’s content, RJ Balaji shared that Karuppu will blend humor with a strong narrative. The first half focuses on a compelling and relatable issue, leading into a high-impact interval, followed by an engaging second half where the protagonist resolves the conflict. He described it as a complete entertainer in the league of classics like Padayappa, Muthu, and Ghilli—a film designed for repeat family viewing.

More about the film

Set in a troubled and chaotic world filled with fear and injustice, Karuppu introduces a mysterious man who emerges as an unexpected savior. The narrative traces his transformation from an ordinary individual into a symbol of hope, as he battles personal challenges and external conflicts. At its core, the story highlights the triumph of good over evil.

Alongside Suriya, the film stars Trisha Krishnan as the female lead, with a supporting cast that includes Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maaya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Yogi Babu. The music and background score are composed by Sai Abhyankkar.

Suriya’s upcoming projects

On the work front, Suriya will next be seen in Vishwanath and Sons, directed by Venky Atluri. The film is described as an emotional romantic drama, co-starring Mamitha Baiju and Raveena Tandon, and is expected to release in July 2026.

He is also working on a cop action-comedy tentatively titled Suriya47, directed by Jithu Madhavan. The film features Nazriya Nazim as the female lead, with Naslen playing a key role. The music is being composed by Sushin Shyam, known for his work in Aavesham.
