Alpha Box Office: Alia Bhatt–Sharvari Starrer Grows 25% on Saturday, Nets Rs. 20.50 Crore in Two Days
Alpha recorded a healthy jump on its second day, collecting an estimated Rs. 11.50 crore nett on Saturday at the Indian box office. The film registered a 25% growth over its opening-day collection of Rs. 9 crore, taking its two-day total to Rs. 20.50 crore nett.
While the numbers may not fully justify the film’s reported production and marketing costs, they can still be considered encouraging given the challenging circumstances surrounding its release.
The Saturday growth could have been stronger, especially since the film has performed best in metro cities and premium multiplexes, which typically witness a bigger surge over the weekend. However, Alpha has received mixed-to-negative audience reception, limiting its growth potential. Even so, the film managed to record an increase when it could just as easily have remained flat or declined.
The focus now shifts to Sunday, where collections are expected to rise only marginally. Evening and night shows in key urban centres, which have driven the film’s business so far, may see some impact, capping the day’s overall growth.
Alpha faced significant challenges even before its release. Female-led action films have traditionally found it difficult to draw audiences at the Indian box office, making the project a high-risk venture. The film also arrived at a time when the YRF Spy Universe has been struggling after the underperformance of Tiger 3 and War 2. Against that backdrop, the film’s ability to post a respectable opening is a positive sign.
The makers also deserve credit for maintaining transparency in reporting box office figures, refraining from inflated collection claims or other questionable practices. Yash Raj Films has consistently followed this approach in recent releases, accepting both successes and setbacks without resorting to artificial inflation.
