Alpha is about to hit the big screens in a couple of hours. The Alia Bhatt and Sharvari starrer spy action drama has sold over 38,000 tickets across the top two national chains, PVR Inox and Cinepolis, for the opening day, which is a decent figure.
Female-led action films have historically struggled at the Indian box office. Compared to Alia Bhatt’s Jigra and Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani 3, Alpha recorded higher advance sales. For the record, Jigra had sold around 32,000 tickets while Mardaani 3 had around 15,000 admissions in the national chains. Another significant reason that hurt the pre-release buzz around Alpha is that the YRF Spy Universe has faced a wave of negativity over the past year following the releases of War 2 and Dhurandhar. Owing to these factors, expectations for Alpha had been fairly muted.
The fate of Alpha will heavily depend on audience reception. If the movie manages to garner a positive word-of-mouth, it can see good growth over the weekend. At Masala Buzz Predicts, Alpha is forecasted to open in the Rs. 4.50-7.50 crore nett range, with a pinpoint projection of Rs. 6.50 crore nett.
The overseas advances are relatively even better compared to India, with the distribution also doing a good job in getting a good release, whereas most of the recent releases suffered from limited showcasing in major territories. The overseas final advance will be close to USD 250k for the first day, which is a good advance number.
For the unversed, the movie marks the first female-led spy actioner in the much-popular cinematic universe. Besides Alia and Sharvari, it also stars Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles. Moreover, Hrithik Roshan will be seen in a guest appearance in the film. It will be interesting to see whether Alpha can emerge as a successful story at the box office or not.
