What came as a pleasant surprise yesterday was the encouraging pre-sales for Alpha in the overseas markets. Today, the film has shown a similarly positive initial response in India, with 5,000 tickets sold for the opening day at the national chains so far. By the end of the day, the film is expected to finish with around 10,000 tickets, or thereabouts.
With one more day of advance bookings remaining, sustained momentum tomorrow could take the national chain pre-sales to around 30,000-40,000 tickets for the opening day.
In absolute terms, that is not a particularly big number, especially considering the film’s high cost. However, context is important. Female-led action films have historically struggled at the Indian box office. On top of that, the YRF Spy Universe has faced a wave of negativity over the past year following the releases of War 2 and Dhurandhar. Owing to these factors, expectations for Alpha had been fairly muted.
These early sales are therefore encouraging, as they suggest the film is overcoming at least some of that negative sentiment. The teaser and trailer were competent enough, and if the film manages to strike the right chord with audiences upon release, it could carve out a run. In many ways, Alpha may also prove to be an important film in determining the future of the YRF Spy Universe.
Masala Buzz Predicts, Alpha is forecasted to open in the Rs. 4.50-7.50 crore nett range, with a pinpoint projection of Rs. 6.50 crore nett. The current pace of advance bookings remains broadly in line with that forecast.
