Rajinikanth is gearing up to return to cinemas this year with the much-awaited sequel Jailer 2. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the action entertainer is reportedly targeting a grand release during the Ganesh Chaturthi weekend in 2026.

Jailer 2 release date update

According to a report by Filmfare, Jailer 2 has reportedly locked September 11, 2026, as its theatrical release date. The makers are said to be planning a massive pan-India launch, with the festive Ganesh Chaturthi holiday period expected to boost the film’s box office prospects through an extended weekend.

Reports further suggest that although several tentative dates were considered earlier, the team is now confident about finalizing September 11. Since Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 14, the extended festive frame could give the film a strong nationwide theatrical advantage. However, an official announcement from the makers is still awaited.

More about Jailer 2

Jailer 2 marks the return of Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, continuing the story after the events of the first film. Alongside the superstar, the sequel reportedly features Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, and Suraj Venjaramoodu in important roles.

Additionally, Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are also expected to reprise their appearances from the original film.

Earlier rumors claimed that Shah Rukh Khan would make a cameo appearance in the sequel. However, reports later suggested that the actor opted out due to his commitments to King. Since then, no replacement casting updates have been revealed.

The film was initially expected to release by mid-2026, but recent reports indicate the makers may have pushed the release further for a larger festive launch.

Rajinikanth’s upcoming films

On the work front, Rajinikanth is also preparing for the tentatively titled Thalaivar173. The project is being backed by Kamal Haasan under the Raaj Kamal Films International banner.

The film has reportedly undergone multiple directorial changes. While Sundar C was initially attached to helm the project, reports later claimed that Cibi Chakravarthi stepped in as a replacement. More recently, speculation suggests Ashwath Marimuthu, known for Dragon, may take over with a fresh script.

Apart from that, Rajinikanth is also rumored to reunite with Kamal Haasan for a project tentatively titled KHxRK Reunion, which is reportedly expected to be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.
