Amaal Mallik is currently receiving praise for his latest melody, Yeh Awarapan, featured in Emraan Hashmi’s upcoming film Awarapan 2. The composer and singer recently spoke exclusively about the making of the song, which eventually became the title track of the highly anticipated sequel.
Amaal Mallik calls Yeh Awarapan a “resilient redemption”
Opening up about the track, Amaal described Yeh Awarapan as a deeply personal and fulfilling moment in his musical journey. He revealed that he had been waiting for the right opportunity to release the melody and is happy that it found its place in Awarapan 2, with Emraan Hashmi’s screen presence, Arijit Singh’s vocals and Rashmi Virag’s lyrics.
Amaal also expressed gratitude towards producer Mukesh Bhatt for believing in his composition and standing by it throughout the process. According to the composer, Bhatt was convinced that the melody deserved to become the film’s title track and continued to support his vision until the end.
“I wanted one song that defines the musician I am”
Amaal also opened up about a challenging period in his career when he felt his creativity was not being utilised properly. Looking back at the previous seven to eight years, he admitted that he often lacked the inspiration to create music because many of the projects coming his way did not give him the creative freedom he wanted.
He revealed that he eventually walked away from several films, while he was also dropped from some projects. During that phase, Amaal had even stated that if 60 films were taken away from him, he would respond with one Awarapan 2. He now feels that Yeh Awarapan has become that answer.
For him, the song represents the kind of musician he wants to be and has given him a sense that he no longer needs to prove himself.
Amaal Mallik says music is his entire world
The composer further explained that Yeh Awarapan reflects his personality and his unconventional approach to music. He admitted that he does not follow a fixed routine or strict schedule and creates music whenever inspiration strikes.
Amaal even revealed that he has placed a bed inside his studio so that he can immediately record musical ideas whenever they come to him after waking up. He described music as the most important part of his life and said that the same madness, passion and obsession went into creating Yeh Awarapan.
Amaal rejected 12-15 versions before finalising the song
Amaal also revealed just how much work went into arriving at the final version of the track. Before even presenting a composition to Mukesh Bhatt, he personally discarded nearly 12 to 15 versions of the song.
Even after that, Bhatt reportedly rejected another six or seven versions before the team finally arrived at the melody that audiences are hearing today. The composer believes the extensive process ultimately helped shape the song into what he considers one of his finest creations so far.
Amaal concluded by calling Yeh Awarapan his best work to date. He also described Awarapan 2 as the kind of cinema he connects with and expressed his desire to work on more such projects and create similarly memorable melodies in the future.
