Born as Chinnasamy in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district, Bharathiraja began his film journey as an assistant director under noted Kannada filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal. His debut film, featuring Kamal Haasan, Sridevi, and Rajinikanth, revolutionized Tamil cinema and established him as a visionary filmmaker. Over the following decades, he directed several acclaimed films including Sigappu Rojakkal, Tik Tik Tik, Kizhakku Cheemayile, and Anthimanthaarai.
Bharathiraja was widely celebrated for bringing authentic rural landscapes and village-based narratives to the forefront of Tamil cinema. His preference for shooting on real locations rather than studio sets helped redefine visual storytelling in the industry. He also challenged conventional casting norms and introduced a more realistic portrayal of characters on screen.
As a director, his final feature film was Meendum Oru Mariyathai (2020), while his last directorial work came in the form of an episode for Modern Love Chennai (2023). Beyond filmmaking, he enjoyed a successful career as an actor and dubbing artist.
His final screen appearance was a cameo role as Palani Swamy in the Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum.
Bharathiraja is survived by his wife Chandraleelavathi, daughter Janani, and daughter-in-law Nandana. His son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja, passed away in 2025.
