Tamil action entertainer Karuppu also registered an excellent opening weekend overseas, with the Suriya-led film grossing approximately USD 4.425 million (Rs. 42.50 crore). Combined with its India total of around Rs. 76.75 crore, the movie’s worldwide opening weekend reached an impressive Rs. 119.25 crore approx.
The overseas earnings are now Suriya’s highest ever in terms of rupee value. While the dollar total is still marginally behind 24 and Singam 2, the film is expected to surpass both by Tuesday. On the global front too, Karuppu is already within touching distance of becoming Suriya’s highest-grossing film worldwide, standing just Rs. 5 crore short of Singam 2, a milestone it is likely to cross today itself. The film is comfortably heading towards a lifetime total of over Rs. 200 crore worldwide and could potentially double Suriya’s previous box office records.
The film displayed a superb trend across the weekend. After opening with USD 1.22 million on Friday, a regular trajectory for a Tamil film would have pointed toward a USD 3.50 million weekend. However, strong jumps on Saturday and a solid hold on Sunday pushed the total close to USD 4.50 million.
Karuppu performed strongly across major Tamil-dominated international territories. Malaysia emerged as the biggest market with approximately USD 1.15 million, while the Middle East contributed another impressive USD 1.05 million.
