Veteran actor Usha Nadkarni has spent more than six decades in the entertainment industry, leaving her mark through memorable performances in Marathi and Hindi films, television and theatre. Best known to Hindi television audiences for her portrayal in Pavitra Rishta, Usha’s life away from the cameras has been equally defined by strength and perseverance. From navigating a difficult childhood to making personal compromises for her acting career, the veteran star has often opened up about the experiences that shaped her life.
Living independently at 80
In a recent interaction with Rajshri Marathi, Usha revealed that she has been living by herself since 1987. With her son settled abroad and no surviving siblings, the actor said she has become accustomed to an independent life.
“I’m used to it. I’ve been living alone since 1987. I’m not scared at all. I used to be scared when I first moved into my building. I would ask the guard to accompany me to my door because I was afraid somebody would attack me from behind. But I’m not scared anymore,” she shared.
Usha also spoke candidly about her views on mortality, saying that people never know how or when their life will end. She added that she has no fear of dying and joked that if she passed away in her sleep, her neighbours might simply assume that the elderly woman had not opened her door.
The sacrifices she made for her career
Usha also opened up about her personal life and revealed that despite separating from her husband years ago, she continued to remain on good terms with his family. While she was busy establishing herself as an actor, her son was primarily brought up by her mother.
Recalling those years during a 2025 conversation, Usha said she would visit her son whenever her schedule allowed. With Marathi theatre demanding several performances in a day, she admitted that there was no fixed routine for meeting him.
Looking back, the veteran actor acknowledged the emotional impact of being away from her son during his childhood. She recalled him telling her that while she had given birth to him, his grandmother had effectively been his real mother.

Before finding fame, Usha grew up in a disciplined household where her father, according to her, could become angry over even minor things. She recalled how he would tear up newspapers if they were crumpled or improperly placed and would also destroy schoolbooks if they were not arranged neatly.
Despite her family’s reservations about acting, Usha remained determined to pursue her passion. She revealed that she had wanted to become an actor from childhood, although her mother, who was a teacher, initially disapproved of the idea because they belonged to a middle-class family and were conscious of what their neighbours might say.
Usha, however, refused to let societal expectations stop her. She recalled making her first acting appearance while she was in the fourth standard and proudly noted that even at the age of 80, she continues to remain active as an actor.
