Lagaan was more than just a film — it became an emotion for audiences and continues to enjoy cult status even 25 years after its release. Now, in an exciting development, Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker are set to reunite for another emotionally charged period sports drama. It has exclusively learned that the duo is collaborating on a film inspired by the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath.
According to sources close to the project, the film is currently in an advanced development stage, with several script-reading sessions already completed. “The team has been passionately working on the story for quite some time, and the final screenplay also carries creative contributions from acclaimed writers Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. It is an emotional and inspiring sports drama set during the turbulent backdrop of the Indo-Pak partition in 1947,” revealed a source familiar with the development.
The makers are reportedly planning to take the film on floors toward the end of the year, with principal photography expected to begin around September 2026. Preparations are already underway on a large scale. In addition to Aamir Khan, another prominent actor is expected to join the cast to portray the parallel lead — the role of Lala Amarnath’s closest companion.
The project will also mark Aamir Khan’s return to cricket-themed cinema after the iconic Lagaan, widely regarded as one of the greatest sports dramas in Indian cinema. Sources suggest the actor is particularly enthusiastic about revisiting the genre that played a major role in shaping his cinematic legacy.
Interestingly, Aamir Khan had earlier confirmed in interviews that he planned to shoot three films back-to-back beginning September 2026. This can now confirm that the Lala Amarnath biopic will be the first project to commence production. The actor is then expected to move on to filmmaker Rahul Mody’s startup-based drama alongside Shraddha Kapoor, followed by the highly anticipated sequel to 3 Idiots, which is expected to reunite him with Vicky Kaushal, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. Reports suggest the sequel is slated to go on floors in the second half of 2027.
