Agastya Nanda and Dharmendra’s Ikkis postponed to January 2026 amid busy Christmas box office

Agastya Nanda and Dharmendra’s much-anticipated film Ikkis has shifted its release date. Originally scheduled for December 25, 2025, the movie will now hit theatres on January 1, 2026. The makers announced the change on X, explaining the need for a clearer window amid a crowded Christmas week.

The team shared, “The true story of India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee, Second Lt. Arun Khetarpal. Some heroes die young. Experience courage in cinemas. #Ikkis releasing on 1st January 2026.” They also revealed that the final trailer will drop this weekend in theatres, adding excitement to the new release plan.

Presented by Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films, Ikkis is directed by Sriram Raghavan and marks his first foray into war cinema. The film is particularly special as it will be Dharmendra’s final on-screen appearance, making it a memorable moment for audiences.

Why the release was moved

The shift comes as Christmas week is shaping up to be extremely crowded at the box office. Dhurandhar continues to dominate theatres, showing strong occupancy with no signs of slowing down. At the same time, Hollywood blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to release in India on December 19, 2025, adding to the competition.

With both films expected to hold screens and prime showtimes, releasing Ikkis on December 25 would have limited its reach. Moving it to January 1, 2026, gives the film a solo release window, better screen allocation in multiplexes and single screens, and prime showtimes from day one.

This isn’t the first time producer Dinesh Vijan has adjusted a release date for maximum impact. Back in 2017, Hindi Medium shifted its release after Baahubali 2 locked in its date, benefiting from an uncluttered run. Similarly, Chhaava avoided a clash with Pushpa 2 in 2024 and enjoyed a stronger box office showing in 2025.

By following the same strategy, Ikkis now has a better chance to build steady word of mouth and sustain momentum at the box office, making its New Year release all the more promising.
