Varun Dhawan recently opened up about a challenging phase in his personal life, revealing that his daughter Lara was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip when she was around 1.5 years old. The actor shared that the condition affected her ability to walk properly and required medical intervention.
Varun Dhawan on daughter Lara’s diagnosis
Speaking on the podcast Be A Man, Yaar, Varun explained that DDH occurs when the hip joint does not fit correctly into the socket, which can lead to uneven leg length and difficulty in walking or running.
He admitted feeling a deep sense of responsibility as a father when the diagnosis came to light. The actor also highlighted that he chose to speak about the issue to raise awareness, noting that if left untreated, the condition can lead to complications like early arthritis or spinal problems.
Treatment and recovery journey
Varun revealed that Lara underwent a procedure in Mumbai to correct the issue. Following the treatment, she had to be placed in a spica cast for about 2.5 months — a phase he described as extremely difficult for both the child and the family.
He recalled the emotional moment of putting her under anesthesia and seeing her wake up in a cast. However, he shared that the cast has now been removed and Lara is on the path to recovery. He also expressed a desire to document the experience in the future, possibly through a book.
Family support system
The actor, who welcomed Lara with his wife Natasha Dalal in June 2024, is known for being deeply family-oriented. Along with caring for his wife and daughter, he maintains a close bond with his parents.
Recently, Varun was seen accompanying his father, David Dhawan, at the Screen & Style Icons Awards 2026, where the veteran filmmaker was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
