Mammootty is preparing for the release of his upcoming film Patriot, which is set to hit theatres on May 1, 2026. Ahead of its release, the actor opened up about his decision to take on an antagonist’s role in Kalamkaval, a project he produced under Mammootty Kampany.
Why Mammootty chose a negative role in Kalamkaval
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty explained that he launched his production house to back stories he truly believes in—especially those others might hesitate to produce.
He shared that most producers would likely have been reluctant to cast him in such a role, which led him to take matters into his own hands.
Emphasizing his passion for acting, Mammootty said he constantly strives to evolve. He noted that repeating the same kind of performance isn’t an option, as audiences expect variety. Highlighting the vast diversity of characters in India—particularly in Kerala—he added that there are countless roles left to explore, and he is eager to take them on.

Up next, Mammootty will headline the spy action drama Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan. The film follows a man who becomes the target of powerful forces after exposing a controversial intelligence application that threatens citizens’ privacy.
The movie also features Mohanlal, Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Revathy, and Darshana Rajendran in key roles.
Originally slated for an April 23 release, Patriot has now been postponed and will arrive in cinemas on May 1, 2026.
