Superstar Rajinikanth is currently busy shooting for his upcoming film Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. But even before the sequel hits screens, there’s already buzz about what’s next for the actor.
If the latest updates are anything to go by, Rajinikanth could begin work on Thalaivar173 as early as April 2026.
Thalaivar173 likely to go on floors in April 2026
The update comes from director Cibi Chakaravarthi, who recently attended the Thaai Kizhavi pre-release event. While speaking at the function, he was asked about the timeline for Thalaivar173. In response, he shared that the team is planning to begin shooting in April 2026.
According to online reports, filming is expected to continue until September, with a prominent Malayalam actor reportedly playing the co-lead. The film is said to be targeting a Pongal 2027 release and is described as a family entertainer packed with fun, commercial elements.
Interestingly, Rajinikanth himself had earlier hinted that he would begin shooting his next project in April, calling it a “proper entertainer” — a phrase that has only heightened fans’ curiosity.
The film is being co-produced by Kamal Haasan under his banner, Raaj Kamal Films International. Initially, director Sundar C was set to helm the project, but he stepped away due to prior commitments. The reins were subsequently taken over by Cibi Chakaravarthi.
Rajinikanth’s packed slate ahead
Before Thalaivar173 begins, Rajinikanth will be seen leading Jailer 2. The sequel reportedly features SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, and Mithun Chakraborty in key roles.
Actors Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are expected to reprise their roles from the first installment. There is also strong buzz about a special cameo by Shah Rukh Khan, which is reportedly scheduled to be shot in March.
Looking further ahead, fans can also look forward to a major reunion. Rajinikanth has confirmed that he will soon share screen space once again with Kamal Haasan in the tentatively titled KHxRK Reunion. The project will be directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
With multiple high-profile projects in the pipeline, the superstar’s schedule looks as packed — and exciting — as ever.
